Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], August 2 (ANI): The investigation and trial in the rape case involving expelled JDS leader and former Lok Sabha MP Prajwal Revanna was completed just within a period of 1 year and 3 months, and the victims were able to secure justice, said the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Saturday.
The SIT press note said, “In spite of all the delay tactics, innuendos and allegations by the defense against all the organs of the state, the SIT with the cooperation of prosecution and judiciary could complete the investigation and trial within a period of 1 year and 3 months, and were able to secure justice to the victims.”
Calling the case “unique,” the SIT stated that the victim in this case has set a powerful example to all women by standing firm against her perpetrators despite all the adversities.
The SIT has lauded the victim’s grit and determination to stand against the perpetrators, terming it a testimony to a woman’s “strength and resilience.”
The press note read, “The case in itself was unique as the perpetrator belonged to a socially, economically and politically powerful family and the victim came from the weakest of the societal strata. The victim in this case has set a powerful example to all the womenfolk by standing firm against her perpetrators despite all the adversities. Her grit and determination to stand against the perpetrators is a testimony to a woman’s strength and resilience.”
Expelled JDS Leader and former Lok Sabha MP Prajwal Revanna has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Special Court for People’s Representatives on Saturday in connection with a rape case of a domestic worker at a farmhouse in Holenarasipura in Hassan district.
A fine of Rs 10 lakh has also been imposed on expelled JDS Leader and former Lok Sabha MP Prajwal Revanna. The court said that the victim will be given a compensation of Rs 7 lakh.
Following the verdict, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said, “Rather than asking me for my reaction on this verdict, the leaders of his own party, JDS, and his ally BJP should be asked. They should say what is right and what is wrong. They have the power and ability to respond to this. Let the JDS state president, national president, and youth wing president respond. We will respect the law and listen to what it says. Why are important BJP leaders including Ashok, Narayanaswamy, and C.T. Ravi not speaking out?”
Karnataka Minister MC Sudhakar said that the court’s decision has to be respected after expelled JDS leader and former Lok Sabha MP Prajwal Revanna was sentenced to life imprisonment in a rape case.
Speaking to ANI, Minister MC Sudhakar said, “We have never expected such a thing would happen in Karnataka, that too from a person being a Member of Parliament…We all should respect the decision the court has given. It has been proved that he committed the act.”
Special public prosecutor Ashok Nayak stated that the accused has been sentenced and fined, but he can challenge the sentence before the High Court.
“The accused has been sent to life imprisonment and fine has also been imposed on him…He can challenge the sentence before the High Court,” Special public prosecutor Ashok Nayak told reporters.
On Friday, a special court in Karnataka found Prajwal Revanna, expelled JD(S) leader and former MP from Hassan, guilty in a rape case involving a domestic help.
Revanna, the grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, was convicted in one of four rape cases filed against him. The conviction comes just 14 months after the case surfaced.
Following the verdict, Revanna broke down in court. The matter came into light in April last year after obscene videos of sexual harassment against multiple women were leaked ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He was arrested in May 2024 after returning from Germany.
He had earlier been denied bail by both the Karnataka High Court and the Supreme Court.
Revanna had challenged the Karnataka High Court order dated October 21, whereby it dismissed his regular bail and anticipatory bail pleas.
On May 31 last year, he was arrested at Bengaluru airport by CID’s SIT on his return from Germany, where he had remained for 35 days, after hundreds of explicit videos surfaced, allegedly featuring him with multiple women.
Revanna had fought 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Hassan constituency but had lost the Lok Sabha election by over 40,000 votes.
In June 2024, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Karnataka Police, which is investigating cases of sexual assault and harassment against Prajwal Revanna, registered a fourth case against him.
Last year, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Karnataka Police filed a chargesheet of 2,144 pages against former JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna in the sexual assault and rape case.
While three cases registered against Prajwal Revanna invoked the Indian Penal Code (IPC)’s section for sexual assault, the fourth case was registered under sections for sexual harassment, stalking, criminal intimidation of a victim, as well as clandestinely recording and sharing images of the victim.
